Retirement letter to my patients:

Dear Patients,

First, I hope that you have been able to stay safe and healthy during the current COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic has likely caused us all to stop and think about our lives and our futures. It certainly has made me think long and hard about my future. We reopened the office practice June 15, 2020 after Montgomery County allowed medical practices to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic and now it has become clear to me that this virus is not going away any time soon and may be with the practice of medicine for the next two years.

Thus, it comes with mixed emotions that I announce my plans to retire from practicing medicine September 15, 2020. This decision has been a very difficult one for me. I have taken care of some of you over 30 years. I really love taking care of my patients and my plan before COVID-19 was to continue to practice. Most of you know that I am a cancer survivor who was had a lifesaving stem cell transplant. I am grateful to be healthy and to have been able to take care of you all these years. However, I can no longer put myself and my family at risk of contracting a very infectious and possibly deadly virus COVID-19.

I will continue to see patients in the office through August 31, 2020, at which time I will offer only telemedicine appointments, prescriptions refills and referrals until the 15th of September. My last day in the office will be September 30, 2020. I will make an effort to refer you to physicians I trust to care for you.

For Internal Medicine patients, I particularly like the Johns Hopkins Community Physicians in downtown Bethesda: Drs. Callsen, Hall, Patel, Watkins and Yang. They participate with most insurances and please go to their website to review the doctorsí bios.

For Rheumatology patients, I particularly like Dr. Evan Siegel in Rockville MD, Dr. Paul DeMarco in Silver Spring, MD, Dr. David Wolfe for fibromyalgia/rheumatology patients in Chevy Chase MD and Dr. Neil Stahl in Woodbridge, VA.

For Paragon Private Health Concierge patients, I would consider Dr. Michael Gnatt in Rockville MD, Dr. Aruna Nathan in Kensington, MD, Dr. James Long in Fairfax VA, and Dr. Anne Rose Eapen in Reston, VA. As they all have slightly different practice philosophies, please read their Page 2 of 2 bios on the Paragon Private Health Website. Other concierge options are Dr. Irene Feldman in Bethesda MD and Dr. Julie Fox in Silver Spring MD.

For patients with other specific questions regarding who they should see following my retirement, I recommend a tele/video office visit in August to arrange a treatment strategy. My staff in the office, Carole and Brenda, are really dedicated to you and they would be happy to try to help you with specific questions or requests.

I plan to mail every active patient, their last comprehensive office visit note. You and your new doctor will see most of your patient history in that note. Most of your new doctors really only want 2-5 years of records. I will keep your patient records as required. If you want me to send your medical records to you or your doctor, please complete the linked HIPAA Medical Records Release Authorization form and get it back to me as soon as possible. There is no charge for patients who want a CD of your last 2-5 years of records or for sending records to your new physicians electronically. If you want your whole chart copied and mailed to you, you will be charged by the customary fees posted on the Maryland Medical society (Med Chi) and the Montgomery County Medical Society.

I will keep my main office telephone number and fax number active for one year for messages after my practice closes September 30, 2020. If you would like to send me a good bye note, please email me at DrR@RussellRothenbergMD.com .

I really appreciate the relationships I have had with many of my patients. I have thoroughly enjoyed caring for you and your families over the years. I would like to think I have made a significant difference in your lives. I will miss you all!

Stay safe. Stay well.

Dr. Russell Rothenberg

My medical practice focuses on Rheumatology Primary Care and consultations and Internal Medicine. I have a special interest in patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome, Systemic Lupus, musculoskeletal pain, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gout and difficult to diagnose and treat Rheumatology and Internal Medicine patients. My practice approach offers comprehensive, patient friendly medical practice services and Rheumatology consultations for my patients.

I really enjoy treating my patients with an emphasis on optimizing their health which means minimizing diseases and helping them reach their personal goals in life. I focus on preventive care to keep patients as healthy as possible. This approach over time has kept most of my patients out of the hospital, improved their ability to function through comprehensive good health practices.

When needed, I put considerable thought into referring my patients to the most appropriate specialists, physical therapists, etc. and I monitor the treatment they are receiving. As a service to my patients, if a patient is having difficulty getting a radiology appointment or a specialist referral in a reasonable amount of time, patients can call my Practice Manager and she will try to expedite the appointment for them.

If my patients have medical concerns or questions, they can call my Practice Manager and/or leave a voice message. I try to call patients back in a timely fashion, usually by the end of the day, when they need to speak with me.

I am on the medical staff of Suburban Hospital, a Johns Hopkins Hospital which is associated with NIH (The National Institutes of Health). In 2017, I started a Concierge Primary Care Rheumatology and Internal Medicine practice which is complementary to my Rheumatology consultative practice. My Concierge patients have additional benefits such as, 24/7 direct communication with me via the confidential patient portal, cell phone, on call service and reserved priority appointment times for Concierge patient visits. For more information about the Concierge member benefits, please visit this page Concierge
